Winter Conference Wrap-up

The 20th Annual South Carolina Vending Association (SCVA) Winter Training Conference drew close to 200 attendees to the three-day professional development and educational meeting held Jan. 24-27, at the Doubletree Guest Suites, Charleston. Of that total, 150 were owners, managers or support personnel for vending operator members.

The conference officially kicked off on Friday, Jan. 25, with a legislative report from Danielle Del Carlo, National Automatic Merchandising Association, followed by a membership update from Dean Gilland. Immediately following, the group gathered for a SCVA legislative workshop lead by board member, Lance Roper of Canteen Vending Services in Columbia. All board members and general membership were in attendance for the meeting and voted to hire lobbyist, Tom Sponseller, Columbia, for 2008. Friday afternoon featured a golf tournament at RiverTowne Country Club and Friday evening a cocktail welcome reception.

On Saturday, Jan. 26, corporate and leadership trainer, Charlie Farrell, Columbia, presented a half-day educational session on management development. Saturday evening featured a Charlestonian buffet dinner and a live casino party for late-night entertainment.  During the dinner, SCVA president Harry Poston of Canteen Vending Services, Greenville and vice president Chet Cromer of Cromer Food Service, Anderson, acknowledged longtime SCVA board member Ron Kerley, as he retired from Canteen Vending Services, Greenville, in January, after beginning his vending career in 1975.

Wrapping up the conference on Sunday, Jan. 27, was humorist and inspirational speaker, Charles Marshall, Dacula, Ga., who delivered “The Seven Powers.”

Mark your calendars for the 2009 Winter Conference, Jan. 22-25, Doubletree Guest Suites, Charleston!

Auction Raises $3,236

The 2008 SCVA Silent Auction, hosted during the Winter Training Conference, raised $2,326!  The auction proceeds will be divided equally amongst the three Winter Conference charities: McLeod’s Children’s Hospital in Florence, Camp Wonder Hands in Columbia and Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Greenville.

Reverse Raffle Winners Hit the Jackpot

On Saturday evening, Jan. 26, at the Winter Conference, after “rolling” the tumbler again and again, three conference guests split the pot and went home with loaded pockets, holding $750 each.  Congratulations to Twitty Auten of Premier Food and Vending in Dillon; Craig Graham of Pee Dee Food Service in Florence and Mark Sidwell of Vend Service in Rome, Ga.

A portion of the reverse raffle proceeds supports the SCVA Scholarship fund!  Thanks for participating and contributing to this great cause!

The South Carolina Vending Association (SCVA), founded in 1972, is a not-for-profit trade association whose member companies are businesses that provide vending and food services to office buildings, hospitals, schools and manufacturing facilities.

In 2003, SCVA established an educational fund to award one deserving student a $500 scholarship.  In 2005, 2006 and 2007, SCVA awarded two deserving students $750 scholarships.  SCVA will do the same in 2008!  The scholarships will be awarded for the 2008-09 academic years; based on financial need, scholarly achievement and career goals.  The scholarships will be given to an employee, or child of an employee, who currently works for a SCVA member company.

It is with great pleasure that we offer to you this opportunity to apply for the SCVA Annual Educational Scholarship.  Members, click here for application.
